Contemporary Public Health Issue

Although the United States is among the wealthiest nations in the world, it is far from being the healthiest. Life expectancy and survival rates in the United States have improved dramatically over the past century, but Americans have shorter lifespans and experience more illness than people in other high-income countries. This assignment gives you an opportunity to put together what you have learned in this course, including, but not limited to:

a) public health policy, policymaking process, and law;

b) public health and the legal system;

c) individual and human rights in public health; and

d) social justice, ethics and public health policy.

Choose a contemporary public health issue (e.g., bioterrorism, gun violence, or natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires), its impact on public health, and strategies for mitigating and managing it once the issue occurs.

Following APA guidelines, create a PowerPoint presentation of 20 slides (plus title and reference slides) on the contemporary public health issue you have chosen and a human rights ethical dilemma. You will present this work to a team of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials tasked with developing global policies for addressing the impact of contemporary public health issues around the world.

Your presentation should assess:

a) the human rights concerns associated with the selected issues in public health policy,

b) the conflicts of interest between public health policies and your selected emerging public health issue, and

c) the gaps in the current health law that apply to the contemporary public health concern you selected with recommended suitable policy interventions to address the selected contemporary public health issue.

Your assignment must be supported with evidence from three to five peer-reviewed references and no more than five years old.

All sources used in this assignment, including your textbook, must be cited and referenced according to the APA standards.

Ensure your presentation includes visuals such as images and graphics to supplement your message. These images or graphics must be cited according to APA standards as well. Your title and reference slides do not count toward the total slide requirement.

As part of the presentation, you MUST use the speaker notes section for the content slides to reinforce your presentation.

Foundations of nursing research

Using the Week 2 research template, identify the research components, listed on the template, as you begin to examine research studies. Review your two assigned articles and address each of the following criteria:

 Identify and describe

     The problem

     Purpose

Hypothesis or research questions of each study.

Discuss the significance of the research to nursing practice.

Identify two details to support the research as qualitative or quantitative.

NOTE: If a component is not addressed, the student receives a zero for that component.

Cite all sources in APA format.

Discussion

The growth, development, and learned behaviors that occur during the first year of infancy have a direct effect on the individual throughout a lifetime. For this assignment, research an environmental factor that poses a threat to the health or safety of infants and develop a health promotion that can be presented to caregivers.

Create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint health promotion, with speaker notes, that outlines a teaching plan. For the presentation of your PowerPoint, use Loom to create a voice over or a video. Include an additional slide for the Loom link at the beginning, and an additional slide for references at the end.

In developing your PowerPoint, take into consideration the health care literacy level of your target audience, as well as the demographic of the caregiver/patient (socioeconomic level, language, culture, and any other relevant characteristic of the caregiver) for which the presentation is tailored.

Include the following in your presentation:

1. Describe the selected environmental factor. Explain how the environmental factor you selected can potentially affect the health or safety of infants.

2. Create a health promotion plan that can be presented to caregivers to address the environmental factor and improve the overall health and well-being of infants.

3. Offer recommendations on accident prevention and safety promotion as they relate to the selected environmental factor and the health or safety of infants.

4. Offer examples, interventions, and suggestions from evidence-based research. At least three scholarly resources are required. Two of the three resources must be peer-reviewed and no more than 6 years old.

5. Provide readers with two community resources, a national resource, and a Web-based resource. Include a brief description and contact information for each resource.

Musculoskeletal disorders

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a leading cause of disabilities worldwide that affects mobility and dexterity. This conditions affect muscles, bones, and joints. The most common include joints, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid, psoriatic arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis; bones, such as osteoporosis, osteopenia and associated fragility fractures, traumatic fractures, sarcopenia; the spine, such as back and neck pain; multiple body areas or systems, such as regional and widespread pain disorders and inflammatory diseases such as connective tissue diseases and vasculitis that have musculoskeletal manifestations, for example systemic lupus erythematosus. Most common muscolosckeletal conditions include:

Osteoporosis or Degenerative Joint Disease(DJD). This condition is basically wear and tear of synovial joints.

 Osteoporosis

Rhematoid Arthritis(RA) is an overactive immune system that attacks healthy tissue such as synovial joints. When it progresses it causes inflammation that eventually destroys the connective tissues and if untreated causes deformity and limitations to mobility and function.

These conditions may lead a pateint to develop joint deformities and limitation and lack of mobility and pain. Traumas or fractures can occur when bones are no longer firm and become week.

Some contributing factors to these musculoskeletal diseases include: genetics, obesity, hypertension, alcohol use, drug use, tobacco use but some are caused by autoimmune disease such as RA.

Most common metabolic conditions include:

 Diabetes

 hyothyroidism

 Cushings Disease

 Addison's Disease and many more...

When diabetes is uncontrolled and unmanaged it impacts multiple organs throughout the body. It can cause other serious diseases such as:

 Cardiovascular Disease

 Coronary Artery Disease

 Cerebrovascular Accident

 Renal damage

Other conditions that are common with diabetes is Infection.

Multiple system Response, Sepsis and shock

Septicemia is usually caused by an untreated infection or trauma injury that travels to the bloostream. Septicemia in a hospital setting can be difficult to notice because of the subtle changes in a patients condition. Nurses observe these changes and adress them in a fast pace. If undiagnosed and/or medically not intervened within 3 hours of developing symptoms, the patient will develop organ failure.

Community Assessment Windshield Survey

Prepare a 15- to 20-slide presentation. Make sure your presentation includes audio and either speaker notes, a video capture of yourself delivering the presentation, or full video (see example listed below). The presentation should be between 8 to 10 minutes long.

This windshield survey is a tool used by public health nurses to obtain basic knowledge about a given community. This survey can be conducted by traveling by car, walking, or taking public transportation to gather information on the health of a community and the members of that community. When conducting this survey, make sure to include all community participants, schools, police, fire, hospitals, clinics, etc. Also, please make sure to share your completed presentation with an identified entity in the surveyed community who might be interested in your findings.

Leadership Strategy

As a nurse, you serve an important role in identifying strategies to effectively manage health care resources and in leading health care quality improvement. You must be able to decide what leadership style or strategy to apply in a given situation to achieve an effective resolution of the issue.

Read the following two scenarios and select one to focus on in this Discussion.

Consider the leadership style or strategy that might be most effective in the scenario you selected.

Scenario 1

You work in a for-profit nursing home, with about 100 beds, on a 20-bed unit that is largely patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Your patient mix is predominantly Medicare and Medicaid patients. Your nursing home is part of a larger system that includes a major medical center, as well as VNA, outpatient dialysis, and a fully integrated network. Your nurse manager is getting feedback from the hospital that your nursing home is sending too many patients to the ED who really don’t need to go. How would you go about figuring out what could be done at the nursing home to prevent avoidable ED visits?

Scenario 2

You’ve been associated with an outpatient cardiology clinic that is part of a large academic medical center. Your patients are mostly charity care and managed Medicaid. Most have a prescription plan, but none have a “family doctor” and use the clinic (and the ED) regularly. Most are unfamiliar with their medications and do not have the resources for care coordination in their family/social network. About 25 CHF patients have been “lovingly,” but inappropriately, called “frequent fliers” because of their inability to manage their own care, their frequent visits to the ED, and their “one night stays” paid at the observation rate. As a staff nurse in this clinic, describe the strategies you could devise for you and your fellow staff nurses targeting these 25 patients. Find at least one article from the professional literature to corroborate your recommendations.

Describe the most appropriate leadership style and/or strategy to apply in the scenario you chose in order to implement the recommendations successfully. Justify your selection.

Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature. Your posts need to be written at the capstone level (see checklist)

Notes Initial Post: This should be a 5-paragraph (at least 550 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old). (Refer to AWE Checklist, Capstone)
